DE Rantau FAQ
Answers for digital nomads and remote workers evaluating MDEC’s DE Rantau pass. Income floors live in current MDEC FAQs — verify before you submit.
-
What is DE Rantau?
A MDEC programme allowing qualified foreign digital nomads / remote workers to stay and work remotely in Malaysia under the pass conditions published by MDEC.
-
Who can apply?
Typically digital freelancers, independent contractors, and remote workers meeting live eligibility definitions (including any tech / non-tech tracks MDEC currently publishes).
-
What income do I need?
Minima appear in MDEC FAQs and have changed across versions. Open the latest FAQ — we do not freeze a number here.
-
Can I work for a Malaysian company on DE Rantau?
DE Rantau is not framed as a substitute Employment Pass for Malaysian payroll employment. If a Malaysian entity is hiring you, read the EP digest.
-
Can my spouse work?
Dependent work rights are restricted under typical MDEC FAQ language — verify the current document; do not assume.
-
How long does it take?
MDEC materials quote processing windows that can extend if documents are incomplete. Endorsement is a separate step after approval.
-
Do I apply online?
Yes — via the DE Rantau application entry MDEC publishes (mdec.my/derantau).
-
DE Rantau vs tourist stay?
Visit passes are not a work strategy. If you need lawful remote-work presence, evaluate DE Rantau against the live rules instead of stretching social visit days.
