PVIP & Dependent — long-stay family, without the wrong principal

Two related but different instruments: the Premium Visa Programme (PVIP) for qualifying long-stay profiles, and Dependent Pass / related family stays that follow a principal’s status. This hub is about sequence and fit — especially when EP or MM2H is the wrong first answer.

PVIP

Premium long-stay — verify the live programme

PVIP is a distinct long-stay track often compared with MM2H for high-net-worth or longer-horizon applicants. Financial eligibility, participation conditions, and any work-related permissions follow the official programme — not informal “PVIP vs MM2H” spreadsheets circulating on social media.

  • Official eligibility — open current ESD / programme materials for PVIP financial and participation criteria (we do not invent thresholds).
  • Compare with MM2H on purpose — lifestyle stay vs programme features; read both official guides side by side for your profile.
  • Accompanying family — confirm who may join under PVIP rules as currently published.

Dependent & family stay

Principal first. Family second.

A Dependent Pass generally exists because a principal already holds (or will hold) a qualifying pass such as an Employment Pass. Filing “Dependent” with no qualifying principal is a structural misfit. Long-Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP) and marriage-to-Malaysian routes are separate maps — confirm the correct instrument with IMI guidance for your facts.

  • Often a fit: spouse and children joining an EP principal; family plans sequenced after the principal’s pathway is clear.
  • Often a misfit: using Dependent language when the household actually needs MM2H/PVIP as a unit; ignoring age and relationship proof requirements.
  • When EP/MM2H is wrong: remote-only workers pushed into EP; retirees pushed into Dependent without a principal; property buyers told purchase equals family stay rights.

Sources to open: ESD PVIP materials; IMI Dependent Pass and LTSVP rules; Tourism Malaysia / MM2H if comparing household long-stay programmes. Last-checked framing: re-verify eligibility and relationship evidence lists before instructing an agent. Not legal advice. Not a government service.

Failure modes

Family files that stall for structural reasons

  1. No qualifying principal. Dependent paperwork without a pass that actually supports dependents.
  2. Relationship / age evidence gaps. Marriage and birth documentation that doesn’t meet current attestation or translation expectations.
  3. Property-as-visa myth. Buying a home does not create PVIP, MM2H, or Dependent entitlement by itself.
