Failure-mode guide
Naming and passport consistency
Small spelling differences look trivial until a bank letter, marriage certificate, and passport disagree. Consistency is a process control, not vanity.
Failure modes
Where names break
- Middle names present on passport but omitted on bank or employer letters.
- Married name vs passport name across civil documents.
- Transliteration differences across scripts without a bridging affidavit when needed.
- Dependent surnames that don’t match the principal’s documents in the way the process expects.
- Old passports cited in property or bank records after renewal.
Verify
Checklist
- Pick the passport bio page as the spelling source of truth for the application pack.
- Diff every supporting letter against that spelling before submission.
- If a civil document differs, obtain the bridging evidence the current guide allows (deed poll, affidavit, etc.) — don’t improvise.
- Update bank and employer letters after a passport renewal before you re-file.
- For families, run the same check per person, not only for the principal.

Official framing: Identity consistency is enforced at multiple desks (bank, ESD, IMI, programme administrators). Align to passport before you attest. Not legal advice. Not a government service.
