Failure-mode guide

Salary and income letter mistakes

Income letters fail when the story, the letterhead, and the live guide disagree. Fix the evidence frame before you argue thresholds.

Failure modes

What goes wrong

  • Employer letters that don’t state role, income, and employment relationship the way MDEC or ESD currently ask.
  • Offshore income packs that mix personal transfers, crypto ledgers, and invoices without a clean audit trail.
  • Salary figures written to an outdated Employment Pass floor instead of the active circular.
  • Self-written “to whom it may concern” letters with no company registration or signatory authority.
  • Currency conversion cherry-picking that doesn’t match the method (if any) the official guide specifies.

Verify

Decision checklist

  • Identify which programme you’re proving income for — DE Rantau, EP, MM2H offshore income, or PVIP — then open that source only.
  • Use company letterhead, signatory name/title, contact details, and dates that a verifier can check.
  • Align contract, payslips, and bank credits so they tell one story for the period required.
  • For remote / foreign employment, make the foreign-employer relationship explicit — don’t blur into Malaysian payroll language.
  • Re-check salary floors and income minima on ESD / MDEC / MM2H sources immediately before filing.
